And you show that you are a letter from Christ delivered by us, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts. (II Corinthians 3:3 ESV)
Keeping rules vs. LIFE
Guitar chords have nearly become a part of my being. I am usually able to play an A sharp minor seventh suspended without thought. I just know what it is, because those chords had been written on my heart, in a way. Of course, some moments I do better than others…
When I began to learn the banjo and mandolin, however, things did not go so well. I had to slowly and purposefully choose the placement of my fingers. I had to be very conscience of what chord was needed, and how to play it. It was written on the musical score, but not in my fingers or my heart.
God’s Law (more than merely the ten commandments… but His Laws of how He works, how the universe works, and how we fit in with all of that) is written on the hearts of His people, through the Holy Spirit.
A Christian living by faith has God’s Law written on our hearts. We do not always access it, but it is a part of us. We do not always notice it, but it is a part of us. We do not always act like it, but it is a part of us.
But the orchestra of our lives is more beautiful because of it.
It should not lead to arrogance, but rather wonder. It should not lead to complacency, but rather excitement. It should not lead to intellectual sleepiness, but rather an attitude of investigation. It should not lead to self-awareness, but rather walking comfortably with the Lord.
And when we realize that we live amongst a world of people without that connection, it turns everything upside down.
